       Design and Construction   

    The defining feature of this valve is an external jacket that envelops the valve's body. This jacket creates a sealed annulus or cavity around the main flow passage. The standard components include:

    1.  Valve Body with Jacket: The core element. The jacket is typically integrally cast or welded onto the standard butterfly valve body. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel (SS304, SS316), and other alloys compatible with both the process fluid and the heating/cooling medium.
    2.  Heating/Cooling Medium Connections: The jacket has inlet and outlet ports through which a thermal transfer fluid is circulated. This is most commonly steam, hot oil, or hot water for heating. For cooling applications, chilled water or glycol solutions can be used.
    3.  Disc: The closure element, often designed with a lug or wafer style. It is engineered to provide a tight seal without interfering with the jacket.
    4.  Stem: A shaft connected to the disc, which is actuated to open or close the valve.
    5.  Seat: Provides a bubble-tight shut-off. Materials like PTFE (Teflon) or reinforced PTFE are standard for their resilience and chemical compatibility.
    6.  Actuator: Can be manual (lever, gearbox), pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic, allowing for remote operation and integration into process control systems.

     

       Working Principle   

    The valve operates on the standard principle of a butterfly valve: a quarter-turn (90°) rotation of the disc moves it from a fully open to a fully closed position, controlling the flow. The insulating function is separate:

    The thermal medium (e.g., steam) is continuously circulated through the jacket surrounding the valve body. This flow of heat energy transfers through the valve body wall and into the process media, compensating for heat loss to the ambient environment and ensuring the fluid remains at its desired viscosity and temperature as it passes through the valve. This prevents freezing or solidification that could seize the disc or block the pipeline.
